Chakras are those energy centers through which the Cosmic energy flows into the human body. The practice of “Yoga in Daily Life” can awaken these centers, which are manifest in each and every person.
There are eight principal Chakras and each is associated with certain aspects of our existence

There are many more centers distributed throughout the whole body, and their energy and vibration are distinguished by their location and qualities.
The Chakras have a significant influence on several levels of our being.
The first level is the physical. At the site in the body where a Chakra is located there are glands, organs and nerves, which can be activated through breath exercises, meditation, Asanas and Mantras.
The second level is the astral level. The vibration and energy flow of the Chakras influence our consciousness and also our physical health. Incorrect food, bad company and negative thoughts reduce or block the energy of the Chakras, which may lead to disorders of consciousness and illness of the body.
In its natural state, the energy of the Chakras moves in a clockwise direction. With a little practice we can feel the radiation of the Chakras with the palm of our hand and determine the direction of rotation. We can influence the rotation of the Chakras by placing the hand about one centimeter above the part of the body where the Chakra is located and moving the hand in a clockwise direction for a few minutes.
The third level of significance is the spiritual level from which intuition, wisdom and knowledge is received. The energy that awakens all the Chakras is called Kundalini. “Kundal” means serpent, therefore this energy is also known as “serpent power”. The rising of the Kundalini is a process of awakening in consciousness. The consciousness expands, awareness and clarity are heightened and life energy is increased. Awakening of the Kundalini means liberation from ignorance, illusion and fluctuating thought, and the development of wisdom, self-discipline and self-control.
The five Chakras associated with normal human existence, are situated along the spine. The three Divine Chakras are situated in the head. Their vibration and energy guide us along the path of spiritual development. The Chakras that are associated with animal consciousness are located from the toes to the coccyx, where the spine begins. In order not to stimulate and awaken our lower nature (which we as humans have already overcome) we should never concentrate on these Chakras.
On this spiritual path we are faced with all our inner qualities and characteristics, until these are fully purified and refined. In the Agya Chakra we reach Self-Knowledge. In the Bindu Chakra we experience the immortality of the Atma (Self ), and in the Sahasrara Chakra the unfolding of the Supreme Consciousness and union of the individual with the Divine Self occurs. As humans, we have the unique opportunity in life to rise to Supreme Consciousness and attain knowledge of the Divine. “Yoga in Daily Life” and “Self-Inquiry Meditation” shows us the way.
Each Chakra within the human body has a corresponding symbol, Mantra and color, as well as a corresponding element, Lotus Blossom, animal and Divinity. These symbolic images illustrate the qualities of each Chakra. Such symbols help us to discover and intuitively feel in meditation, the various attributes of the Chakras. Recitation of the Chakra’s Mantra awakens and strengthens the energy of that Chakra.

The Muladhara Chakra is situated at the base of the coccyx, it is the first of the human Chakras. Its corresponding Mantra is LAM. The Muladhara Chakra forms the border between animal and human consciousness. It is linked to the unconscious mind, where our actions and experience from past lives are stored. Therefore according to Karmic Law, this Chakra contains the course of our future destiny. This Chakra is also the foundation for the development of our personality.
The positive attributes of the Muladhara Chakra are vitality, vigor and growth. The negative qualities are laziness, inertia, self-centered and domination by one's physical desires.
The Divinity of this Chakra is Lord Shiva in his manifestation as “Master of the Animals” - Pashupati Mahadeva - meaning that the lower qualities have been overcome.
In the symbolic picture of the Muladhara Chakra there is a Lotus with four petals. These represent the four functions of the psyche: mind (Manas), intellect (Buddhi), consciousness (Chitta) and ego (Ahamkara) - all of which originate in this Chakra.
Life is consciousness and consciousness strives for evolution. The symbols of the Muladhara Chakra are characteristic of both energy and upward movement. The Chakra’s colour is red, the colour of Shakti. Shakti means energy, movement, awakening and development. Red symbolises awakening of the sleeping consciousness to active, alert consciousness. Another symbol of the Muladhara Chakra is the inverted triangle, which has two meanings. One meaning suggests that the Cosmic energy is pulled in and guided downwards, as if into a funnel. The other meaning indicates an upward expansion of consciousness. The downward-pointing tip of the triangle is the starting point, the seed, and the upward-moving sides of the triangle indicate the unfolding of consciousness towards human consciousness.
The animal designated to represent the Muladhara Chakra is an Elephant with seven trunks. The Elephant is a symbol of wisdom. The seven trunks symbolize the seven treasures of the earth (Saptdhatu). The element of the Muladhara Chakra is Earth, our base and “mother”, which provides us with energy and food.

The Svadhishthana Chakra is situated at the lower end of the Sacrum. Its Mantra is VAM.
The Svadhishthana Chakra marks the second level of our development. The evolution of consciousness towards pure, human consciousness begins in the Svadhishthana Chakra. It is the seat of the subconscious mind where all life experiences and impressions since the beginning of our existence in the womb are stored. The Muladhara Chakra is the storehouse of our Karmas, however these are activated in Svadhishthana Chakra.
Awakening of the Svadhishthana Chakra brings clarity and development of the personality. But before this can happen we must purify our consciousness of negative qualities. In the symbolic picture of the Svadhishthana Chakra is a Lotus with six petals. These represent our negative qualities which are to be overcome - anger, hatred, jealousy, cruelty, desire and pride. Other base qualities that hinder our development are lethargy, fear, doubt, revenge, envy and greed.
The animal designated to represent the Svadhishthana Chakra is the Crocodile. It symbolizes laziness, insensitivity and the danger that slumbers in this Chakra. The element of Svadhishthana is Water, also a symbol of hidden danger. Water is soft and pliable, but also an immense power when out of control. This is just how it is with the Svadhishthana Chakra. When negative emotions arise from the subconscious to the conscious state, we can be completely put off balance.
The Divinity of this Chakra is Brahma the Creator and his daughter Sarasvati, the Goddess of wisdom and fine arts. The colour of Svadhishthana is orange, the colour of the sunrise, which is symbolic of the rising consciousness. Orange is the colour of activity and purity. It indicates the positive qualities that unfold in this Chakra such as joy, faith, self-confidence and energy.

The Manipura Chakra is situated behind the navel. Its Mantra is RAM. When our consciousness has reached the Manipura Chakra we have overcome the negative aspects of Svadhishthana. The Manipura Chakra contains many precious jewels such as the qualities of clarity, self-confidence, bliss, self-assurance, knowledge, wisdom and the ability to make correct decisions.
The colour of the Manipura Chakra is yellow. The animal designated to represent Manipura is the Ram. The corresponding element is Fire, therefore it is also known as the Fire or Sun Centre. The fire element manifests in the body as heat in the Solar Plexus. The Manipura Chakra is the centre of vitality. It controls our energy balance to strengthen and consolidate our health. This Chakra has an effect like a magnet, attracting Prana from the Cosmos.
As the seat of digestive fire, this Chakra regulates the function of the Pancreas and digestive organs. Blockages in this centre can cause many health problems such as digestive disorders, circulatory disease, diabetes and fluctuations in blood pressure. However, a strong and active Manipura Chakra greatly supports good health and assists us in overcoming many illnesses. When the energy of this Chakra flows freely, the effect is like that of a power station, constantly supplying vitality - bestowing balance and strength.
In the symbolic picture of the Manipura Chakra there is a Lotus with ten petals. These represent the ten Pranas, the vital forces, which control and nourish all functions of the human body. An additional symbol of the Manipura is that of a triangle with its tip pointing downward. This indicates the spreading of energy, growth and development. Activation of the Manipura Chakra frees one from negative energies and purifies and strengthens one’s vitality.
The Divinities of this Chakra are Vishnu and Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu is symbolic of the evolving human consciousness that no longer contains any animal characteristic. Goddess Lakshmi represents material and spiritual prosperity, which blossom and prosper with God's blessing.
Anahata nada = eternal sound the sound OM
The Anahata Chakra is situated in the center of the chest, close to the heart. Its Mantra is YAM. The colour of Anahata Chakra is light blue, the colour of the sky. The corresponding element is Air. Air represents freedom and expansion. This means that in this Chakra our consciousness can expand into infinity.
The Anahata Chakra is the seat of the Divine Self (Atma). In the symbolic picture of Anahata Chakra there is a Lotus with twelve petals. These represent the Divine qualities of the heart, such as bliss, peace, harmony, love, understanding, empathy, clarity, purity, unity, compassion, kindness and forgiveness. However, the Heart Centre is also the centre of emotions and feelings. In its symbolic image are two star-shaped, superimposed triangles. The tip of one triangle points upward, the tip of the other points down. When the energy of the Anahata Chakra flows up towards spiritual consciousness, our feelings are expressed as Bhakti, pure, Divine love and devotion. However, if our consciousness sinks down to the spheres of worldly passion, our emotions become confused and unbalanced. It is then that desire, jealousy, sadness and despair overwhelm us.
Anahata is the seat of Poesy. Concentration on this Chakra can develop one’s talent as an author or poet. Another power arising from Anahata Chakra is Sankalpa Shakti, the power to fulfill desires. When you wish for a desire to be fulfilled concentrate on it in your heart. The purer your Anahata Chakra, the more swiftly the wish will be fulfilled.
The animal designated to represent Anahata Chakra is the Antelope, which reminds us of attentiveness and alertness. The Divinities of this Chakra are Shiva and Parvati, representative of Consciousness and Nature. Both should unite in harmony in this Chakra.

The Vishuddhi Chakra is situated in the throat. Its Mantra is HAM. The colour of Vishuddhi is purple. In this Chakra our consciousness reaches the fifth level. The corresponding element is Akasha (space). “We may also find this translated as “Ether”, which suggests this space should be filled with energy. The Vishuddhi Chakra is the starting point of Udana Prana. It is a function of this Prana to purify the body of toxic substances while breathing. The name of the Chakra is derived from this particular function. Purification not only occurs on the physical level, but also on the level of the psyche and mind. All problems and unpleasant experiences that we have “swallowed” and suppressed during the course of our life, continue to exist in the subconscious mind until they are faced and resolved with wisdom.
The Divinity of the Vishuddhi Chakra is Brahma, the Creator, the symbol of Consciousness. In meditation when individual consciousness is dissolved in Akasha, we attain Knowledge and Wisdom. The animal designated to represent Vishuddhi Chakra, is a White Elephant. We also find in this picture an image of the moon, symbolic of the mind.
The Vishuddhi Chakra unleashes an unlimited feeling of happiness and freedom that allows our abilities and skills to blossom. Along with this stage of development there is a clear voice, a talent for singing and speech, as well as balanced and calm thoughts.
Until this Chakra is fully developed, certain difficulties may be experienced. Blockage of the Vishuddhi Chakra produces feelings of anxiety, lack of freedom, restriction, thyroid and throat problems. There may be physically unfounded manifestations of swallowing problems and speech impediments.
In the symbolic picture of Vishuddhi Chakra is a Lotus with sixteen petals. These represent the sixteen potential abilities (Klas) that a human can develop. Since the Vishuddhi Chakra is the centre of sound, the number sixteen can also represent the sixteen vowels of the Sanskrit alphabet. Vak Siddhi may be realised in this centre, which is the extraordinary ability to have the words that one speaks come true.
Agya = command, knowledge
The Agya Chakra is situated in the middle of the forehead, between the eyebrows. For this reason it is also known as the “third eye”. The Agya Chakra is the centre of clarity and wisdom. It forms the boundary between human and Divine consciousness. It is the meeting point of the three principle Nadis, Ida (Moon Nadi), Pingala (Sun Nadi) and Sushumna (Central Nadi). When the energy of these three Nadis unites here and rises further, we attain Samadhi, Supreme Consciousness.
Its Mantra is OM. The colour of Agya is white. Its element is the element of the mind, Anupada Tattva. Its symbol is a white Shiva Lingam, representative of creative consciousness. In this and all subsequent Chakras, there are no animal symbols. At this level, only pure, human and Divine qualities exist.
In the symbolic picture of the Agya Chakra there is a Lotus with two petals, indicating that at this level of consciousness there exists “only two”, Atma (Self ) and Paramatma(God). The Divinities of Agya Chakra are Shiva and Shakti united in one form. This means that in the Agya Chakra consciousness and Nature are already united, but have still not merged into total unity.
The qualities of this Chakra are unity (Ekata), emptiness (Shunya), truth (Sat), Consciousness (Chitt) and bliss (Ananda). The “eye of knowledge” opens within and we see the reality of the Self - hence the term “third eye”, which is an attribute of Lord Shiva. The Agya Chakra is the seat of the “inner Master”. It indicates that wisdom and knowledge are realised in all actions. The egocentric intellect has surrendered to the higher, ethical, reasoning power of discrimination (Viveka). However a blockage in this Chakra has the opposite effect, diminishing one’s power of contemplation and discrimination, resulting in confusion.
Bindu = point, drop
The Bindu Chakra is situated beneath the whirl of hair at the tip of the head. In the picture of the Bindu is a Lotus with twenty-three petals. Its symbol is the moon, which supports the growing of vegetation. Lord Krishna said: “Becoming the nectarine moon I nourish all plants” (Bhagavad Gita XV/13). Its Divinity is Lord Shiva, who is always portrayed with the crescent moon in his hair. The Mantra is SHIVOHAM. This Chakra is colourless and transparent.
The Bindu Chakra is an important centre for health, giving us the power for physical and mental recuperation. This Chakra benefits eyesight, quietens the emotions and promotes inner harmony, clarity and balance. With the help of this Chakra we are capable of controlling hunger and thirst and gain the ability to overcome unhealthy eating habits. Concentration on the Bindu relieves anxiety and depression, nervousness and also feelings of oppression in the heart.
The Bindu Chakra bestows physical and mental health, vitality and youthfulness, because it produces “the nectar of immortality” (Amrita). This nectar usually drops into the Manipura Chakra where it is burned by the digestive fire without being fully utilised by the body. For this reason the Rishis of ancient times sought a method to collect this valuable nectar and discovered that the flow of nectar can be arrested with the help of the tongue and Vishuddhi Chakra. The tongue contains subtle energy centres, each corresponding to an organ or area of the body. In the Yoga techniques of Ujjayi Pranayama and Khechari Mudra, the tongue curbs the flow of nectar and stores it in the Vishuddhi Chakra. Like a homeopathic medicine it is then redistributed throughout the whole body via the subtle energy channels, where its healing effects unfold.
Sahasrara = thousand, infinite
The Sahasrara Chakra is located on the top of the head. It is also known as the “Thousand-Petalled Lotus”, “Brahmarandhra” (the door to God) or the “Centre of a Million Rays” because it radiates like the Sun. No other light comes close to the brilliance of the Sun. In the same way, the energy and radiation of all other Chakras pale in the radiance of the Sahasrara Chakra.
In the Sahasrara Chakra exists an important power - Medha Shakti. Medha Shakti is a hormone that influences brain functions such as memory, concentration and intelligence. Yoga exercises can activate and strengthen Medha Shakti.
The Sahasrara has no special colour or quality. It is pure light, which contains all colours. The energy of all Nadis unites in this centre, like the waters of a thousand rivers pouring into the sea. Here is the seat of Shiva, the Supreme Self. The awakening of the Sahasrara Chakra means revelation of Divine Splendour and attainment of Supreme Consciousness. Just as night disappears with the rising of the Sun, ignorance fades with the awakening of the Sahasrara Chakra.
This Chakra represents the goal of Yoga, Self-Realisation and God-Realisation, where the individual soul unites with Cosmic Consciousness. One who gains this is liberated from all Karmas and achieves Moksha - complete liberation from the cycle of rebirth and death. In meditation the Yogi reaches Nirvikalpa Samadhi (the highest level of Samadhi) at the Sahasrara Chakra, where the mind finally comes to complete stillness and finds fulfilment in the union of knowledge, the knower and the object of knowledge.
In the Sahasrara Chakra the thousand-petalled Lotus blooms as a symbol of complete, unfolding Consciousness. The Divinity of this Chakra is Shiva in the form of pure, Supreme Consciousness. The corresponding element is Adi Tattva, the Supreme, spiritual Tattva. The Mantra is the same as for Agya Chakra, the original sound OM
